Brief History of SpiderSmart
In 1988, SpiderSmart began as Reading and Writing Center to help students in Northern Virginia improve their reading and writing skills. SpiderSmart's unique blend of reading, writing, and individual instruction, together with SAT and math classes, made the center a popular choice for parents who wanted their children to succeed at schools. In 1999, SpiderSmart decided to make the successful Reading and Writing Program available to students in other geographic regions as well by converting it to an internet-based program. Interest in the SpiderSmart's unique and effective approach increased as students from all over the U.S. and other countries discovered the program online.
Based on the success of the first satellite center opened in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 2003, new centers are opening in Houston, Texas in November 2004 as well as in Centreville, Virginia in early 2005. SpiderSmart is expanding to Korea and Europe to meet the growing demand for effective English instruction.

SpiderSmart programs are individualized. That means your children will work directly and independently with a teacher when they are at one of our learning centers. Some learning centers offer individual instruction at exorbitant prices; other learning centers offer more reasonable prices but do not provide individual instruction. SpiderSmart is committed to giving your children the best quality individual instruction at the lowest possible price. Visit any SpiderSmart Learning Center and you´ll see our first goal is to help our students succeed.
One Parent at a Time
SpiderSmart owes its success to the strong relationships we've fostered with our parents and students. We believe that parent involvement can greatly enhance student's success. We encourage our parents to conference with our teachers or to discuss anything they think may improve their children's experience. Most of our business comes from happy parents referring other parents; at SpiderSmart, we do our best to ensure all of our parents are happy parents.
One Teacher at a Time
Great programs and philosophies fall flat if there aren't talented teachers to back them up. At SpiderSmart, we put a lot of time into selecting our center teachers. All potential teachers are tested for writing or math proficiency and interviewed before they are hired. We only consider advanced undergraduates or those who have already completed a bachelor's degree. A majority of our teachers have Masters degrees. Our teachers are smart, caring, and fun. Most of our teachers foster mentor relationships with their students that go beyond support in just one academic subject.
The Reading & Writing Program
As far as we know, the SpiderSmart Reading & Writing program is the only one of its kind. Other methods can not compare to the intrinsic and life-long benefits of reading books, thinking critically, mastering vocabulary, and composing compelling essays.
